Cancer treatment in older adults, particularly chemotherapy, radiation, and post-surgical recovery, is exhausting in ways that are hard to anticipate. Houston is fortunate to have MD Anderson, but the day-to-day management still happens at home. Here is how home care helps.

Treatment day support

Transportation to and from MD Anderson or other oncology centres. A caregiver waits during treatment and helps the patient home, when they are most exhausted and least safe.

Side effect management

Nausea, fatigue, mouth sores, neuropathy, immune suppression, caregivers monitor symptoms daily, support hydration and nutrition, and help maintain comfort. Documentation supports the oncology team's adjustments.

Infection prevention

Chemotherapy patients are immunocompromised. Caregivers manage hygiene rigorously, monitor for infection signs (low-grade fever is significant), and limit visitor exposure during high-risk windows.

Nutrition during treatment

Appetite changes constantly. Taste shifts. Caregivers adapt meals daily, small frequent meals when full meals are not possible. Protein and hydration are priorities.

Emotional and spiritual support

Cancer is exhausting emotionally as well as physically. A consistent caregiver provides continuity through what is often a frightening experience for the patient and family.
