VA Aid & Attendance for Houston Veterans

The VA benefit most Houston veteran families never claim, even though they qualify for thousands per month toward home care.

VA Aid & Attendance is a tax-free benefit available to wartime veterans (and surviving spouses) who need help with daily activities. In 2025, the maximum monthly benefit exceeds $2,800 for a married veteran. Most Houston veteran families never apply because the paperwork is overwhelming. Here is how to navigate it.

Eligibility requirements

Three criteria: (1) wartime service for at least 90 days with at least one day during a defined war period (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War), (2) medical need, typically requiring help with daily activities or housebound status, (3) financial need, countable assets below the Veterans Affairs threshold, with medical expenses subtracted from income.

What it pays for

Aid & Attendance can be used for in-home care, assisted living, or skilled nursing. There are no restrictions on the type of care provider, but documentation of the care relationship is required.

How to apply

Applications go through the local VA regional office. The form requires service records, financial documentation, medical evidence, and care invoices. We work with several VSO (Veterans Service Officer) volunteers and accredited claims agents in Houston who help families through the process.

Timeline and back-pay

Approval typically takes 4–8 months. The good news: benefits are back-paid to the application date once approved. Families who start care early and apply concurrently usually receive a meaningful retroactive payment.
